2 BOOKS POSTED!

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Did I ever tell you I went to Technical College? Well, it’s true. After a year, I dropped out because I had to copy other people’s code to get through my programming language classes.

I successfully turned the work of one day into the work of three. Half of the blame goes to a fickle laptop and a comically slow internet connection, while the rest of the blame lies with me. I have no head for consistancy, and apparently typing ‘html’ instead of ‘htm’ does make a difference.

But! It was worth the effort. I’ve added new menus, the theme has moved from ‘La Mitad del Mundo’ to Shiva’s holy city of Varanasi. This means, not only has the look improved, but if you die while browsing the website you’ll go directly to Nirvana (Wikipedia: Varanasi). More importantly, I’ve taken my first two books and posted them on-line in their entirety.

Five of my books are listed in the Novels menu. Heres a synopsis of their names, vital info. and availability:

The Coconut and the Swan (First Book, Full-Length Novel, Now Available!)

10 Tales of Origins and Extinctions (Second book, Short Story Collection, Now Available!)

Earthenware (Third Book, Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-Novel, Coming Soon)

Cavernous (Fourth Book, Full-Length Novel, Preview Available)

Mirror Box (Fifth Book, Full-Length Novel, Preview Available)

As stated, the full version of Earthenware will follow. This book is especially adapted for on-line reading, because it has all the fun of choose-your-own-adventure without all that nasty, back-and-forth, page turning. On the same token, it does require that I add links to 100+ pages, and it’ll take me a few weeks to work up the motivation for it. I’ve already read and editted the book, and I greatly enjoyed the expanded version, laughing over jokes I’d long forgotten.

Also, it’s come to my attention that “The Coconut and the Swan” and “The Party” (one of the ‘10 Tales’) has been flagged as unsuitable by a few content-blocking, fascist-pri*k services. For “The Party”, it can’t be helped. It’s the most vulgar thing I’ve written (possible exception: Mirror Box) and based on true events that cannot be changed. “The Coconut and the Swan” was the fault of one word, I suspect, and the word has since been purposefully misspelled.

I have no qualms about what you do with these books, so long as you don’t distribute them without my consent or try to sell them. I’m considering a print-on-demand service for those who prefer the paper and ink variety of book, but money must come first, sadly.
If you have something to say about the books, website, global concerns, etc., you can email me at readerresponse@hamishdee.com or send a message through Facebook.
Have a good read!

Sightseeing Sofa Update

Monday, July 21st, 2008

After announcing my involvement in Sightseeing Sofa, a number of people mentioned that they couldn’t access the English version. This has recently been resolved and the Sightseeing Sofa is now fully bilingual (English/Dutch).

My associates Jeannette and Ronald are currently in Mexico assembling the website and starting their adventure, while I continue assisting with the translation.

So, have another look: www.sightseeingsofa.com

Sightseeing Sofa

Trivia: What is the oldest content on hamishdee.com (excepting blog entries about Reeses Pieces)?

Answer: The South American Travel Notebook (viewable on the travel page)

I didn’t ask this question to test your loyalty; I know your love is true. I ask because the world of Hamish Dee has gone full circle. I will again do travel writing. Only this time, it’s for someone else. Let me explain:

One year ago, I was traveling through Turkey (pics here) and I met a youngish man named Ronald. We chatted about our plans, swapped information, and eventually followed our separate paths.

Recently, this old companion of the road came back to me with an exciting project called, The Sightseeing Sofa. Jeanette (travel companion) and Ronald will be traveling the world for one year and documenting the results on their website www.sightseeingsofa.nl During their travels they will take suggestions from subscribers about where to go, what to do and how to do it. There will be a journal, pictures and video. And at the end of the year-long quest, there’ll be a book.
Now, looking at that lowercase “nl” in the web address, you’ve probably guessed where I enter into this. Jeanette and Ronald are from the Netherlands, i.e. Dutch. Considering my experience as a writer and traveler, I’ve been welcomed into the fold in order to sand and polish the English version of their website.

So I encourage all of you to visit, subscribe, then sit back and enjoy.

The Silent Spoon

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

It’s an uneventful week in Auroville, India. I’ve been milling around, occupied with job searches and flight complications, but the pleasantries have been few. Rather than squander this little break in events, I conceptualized and completed a small project named, The Silent Spoon.

As the title suggests, maybe, The Silent Spoon is a children’s book. It’s my first book written for a younger audience and it’s an adorable, little piece, at that. The only setback is it’s an illustrated book, and I’m not the world’s most brilliant artist. Actually, I can do heiroglyphs very well (I’ve had high compliments for my Anubis) but beyond that I’m merely average. One of two things will happen. Either, I learn to draw, or I get an illustrator to do it for me. If it sees a completed form, the book will be about 75 pages long, and then an online sample would follow.

Clearly, the subject is a little girl who carries a spoon that makes things quiet.
